Education and Training

The Talladega County, Sylacauga City and Talladega City School systems are all fully accredited by both the State Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. There are a total of fifteen county, eight city elementary and secondary public schools, and three private schools. Central Alabama Community College in Childersburg and Talladega College, and the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind are among the county's higher educational institutions. Other accredited colleges and universities within an hour drive include the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City, Jacksonville State University, and the University of Montevallo. All offer advanced degrees.

Sylacauga's school system is excellent. Its pupils score above state and national averages on standardized tests. Sylacauga High School and East Highland Middle School were awarded Certificates of Excellence in Education in 1985 U.S. competition.

In 1988 the Sylacauga City Schools Foundation was formed. The foundation raises funds to aid Sylacauga schools in their continuing quest for excellence, focusing on areas such as expanded instruction in music and art, increased academic competition, additional interaction with professionals such as scientists, authors, etc., and other enrichment opportunities.

TALLADEGA CITY SCHOOLS

Talladega City Schools are dedicated to the development of the total child. Continuing threads of service in all programs include instruction in basic subject area, library, music, computer training, and physical and social development. Expanded educational opportunities are also available. Five elementary schools, a middle school, a junior high school and a senior high school serve approximately 4,000 students.

TALLADEGA COUNTY SCHOOLS

Talladega County Schools have a revised and extensive curriculum designed to make its 8,500 students competitive in the college and job markets through the 1990's. Capital improvements provide comfortable classrooms and buildings conducive to learning. Talladega County students are served in fourteen schools throughout the county.

Also located in Talladega, Talladega College is a four-year, nationally accredited liberal arts college. Founded in 1867, Talladega College consistently ranks high nationally among historically black colleges, in overall number of students who receive PhD's and who enter the medical profession.

CENTRAL ALABAMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Central Alabama Community College has a long and distinguished history of making dreams a reality for thousands of students. CACC offers a quality education that is affordable and close to home, but driven by a dynamic combination of strong academic and technical curriculums, championship athletics, cultural enrichment offerings, active scholastic and social organizations, leadership opportunities and community outreach.

The college's technical division offers Associate Degree and Certificate programs in many vocational fields. Examples of programs include: Computer Science, Drafting and Design, Electronics, General Business, Hazardous Materials, Nursing, Office Administrator, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Carpentry, Diesel Mechanics, Machine Shop Management and Supervision, and Welding.

ALABAMA INSTITUTE FOR DEAF AND BLIND (AIDB)

Located in Talladega, AIDB's Alabama School for Deaf and Alabama School for Blind offer academic, vocational, and independent living instruction, athletics, and extracurricular activities for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

The Helen Keller School of Alabama emphasizes instruction in skills needed for daily living deaf, blind, and multi-handicapped students.

The E.H. Gentry Technical Facility offers evaluation, personal and work adjustments, and vocational training to sensory impaired adults.

Alabama Industries for the Blind is Alabama's largest employer of blind persons. As a non-profit production workshop, AIB manufactures dozens of different products for federal and state use, law contracts and commercial accounts.

ALABAMA INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING

AIDT will conduct pre-hire and on-the-job training to your specifications free of charge. Their services can include, but are not limited to, supervisory training; pre-hire and on-the-job training of production employees; reimbursement of instructor salaries; payment of expenses for classroom materials, instructional manuals and consumable supplies; leasing equipment for training purposes; and providing on-site mobile classroom units. This has been evaluated as the best state training program in the United States.
